I am a resident of Douglas County in the Greenland area between Larkspur and Monument where my partner Keith and I operate a small cattle ranch. I am a Democrat. I was born in Chicago, Illinois on September 11th, 1960 which makes me 47 years old, 48 this September. I grew up in Arlington Heights, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago. My parents were Democrats in a mostly Republican area. After graduating from Buffalo Grove High school in 1978, I moved to Golden, Colorado where I lived with my brother and his family. I worked for my brother in the construction trade. Education Realizing I needed to get a college education and that living with my parents would make that easier, I returned to Illinois to attend Rockford College, where I obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree with majors in Computer Science, History, and Liberal Arts Honors. I graduated in 1983 with honors. While working full time in the Information Technology industry, I attended Roosevelt University in Chicago, Illinois obtaining a Masters of Business Administration with a concentration in International Studies. I graduated in 1994 with honors. I returned to Colorado in 1995. Employment I work for a large management consulting firm with offices in nearly every major city around the world. I am a Solution Architect with my firm specializing in business transformation defining application managed service solutions where a client hires my firm to provide IT or business processing services. In that role, I develop conceptual solutions and the plans for implementing these solutions including estimating labor and expenses related to providing services. I work with a team to present our solutions including price to client typically as a response to an RFP. These solutions are typically 5 – 10 years in duration and priced at $20M to $150M and more. I have worked with quite a few, very large Fortune 500 companies defining application support solutions including several clients who make up the Dow Jones Industrial Average (also known as the DOW 30). I have also worked with several federal government agencies and State and local governments to define IT solutions to meet their needs. The solution development process requires a deep understanding of existing processes and systems. The solution development process requires that I spend months researching how work is currently performed and then develop new business solutions including the business transformation programs needed to deploy these solutions. For example, to develop the new government solutions for a County in Southern California, I spent several months meeting with County officials to understand their current business and citizen support processes, staff and budget needed to perform these processes, and how innovations in technology could be deployed to improve staff productivity and citizen satisfaction. I met with County officials and employees, toured County facilities and operations throughout the County, and developed innovative solutions for the County. My experience in developing commercial and government solutions has shown me that the techniques and approaches to managing and performing work which have delivered incredible increases in productivity in the private sector can be applied to the public sector at all levels including State government. My job has allowed me to live all over the world while keeping Colorado as my home base. Typically, I commute to or near my client's location during the week then return to Colorado as my home base on weekends. I have worked in Arizona, Alaska, Florida, Massachusetts, Illinois, and several other places in the US. I also lived and worked in Japan for a year, Amsterdam for 18 months, and Turkey, Spain, the UK, France, Belgium, and Germany for shorter periods. My job has given me the chance to experience different cultures including work cultures around the world all while keeping grounded by living in Colorado. I have years of experience defining innovative solutions for improving client productivity and customer satisfaction. My background of architecting innovative solutions including government solutions has prepared me to be an effective innovator as the Colorado State Senator for District 4. I understand what innovation is available to government and how to deliver improved services to citizens. I know I can bring innovation to State government in the same manner. |
